Just Kidding:D well sort of:rolleyes:

Actually, I am wondering if anyone here has ever had to wear a night guard?

If so do you actually wear it? Did it help you? Was it for TMJ or teeth grinding or both?

Just thought I'd see if you guys have any info before I drop a chunk of change on it?

I had one for grinding my teeth when I was younger, It didn't work b/c it never actually entered my mouth ... well maybe once or twice. My solution ended up being much simpler though, I just had to stop doing ecstasy. Of course being an adult you'd probably have much more luck than I did at the time.

The only person I know who had anything like that, got it because she ground her teeth REALLY badly when sleeping. (A bit like CA does, actually!! LOL! :D)

Unfortunately, she had a "thing" about having things in her mouth (yes, THEM too, so she said!!) and had to give it up after less than a week! Stopped her grinding her teeth, but only because she couldn't get to sleep!!! :)

I really should have one... I am a very bad tooth grinder... have been known to wake up with pieces of my teeth in my mouth... I have always heard that they are rather expensive.. so I haven't looked into it. :(

The crowns are costing me a fortune and am developing a wicked case of TMJ...trying to be proactive but you are right they are $$$.

my bf just ordered the night guard thing, so I have yet to find out how it will work on him, however he's a crazy teeth grinder while he sleeps at night, so I hope it really works, for both our sake!

Spend the money Lilith! It is worth it!!

If I would have known what I know now, I would have bought it right away!

I had the TMJ surgery. They remove the jaw from it's socket and scrap it.....It's very painfull. And I only had it done on the right side! It took a few weeks before I could actually talk right...and once you have the operation you can never "Open your mouth as wide as it used to open"!!! Ohhh and I am not kidding!! I love giving head..but there are some days that my mouth will not open as wide as I want it to go...or even just eating a banana is difficult!!

I now wear my night guard as I DO NOT want to get the other side done!!

OK well I guess I'll keep the fitting appointment. I am far too chicken to face having surgery. Diva~ Did you grind your teeth? Is that what aggravated the TMJ?

<----also has TMJ.

I'm not sure I ever got a diagnosis as to what caused it, although I know I was told that I clench my teeth at night while sleeping. It does get quite painful during extended periods of oral sex, which is a shame because I love doing that. Most of the time I'll switch positions, do something different, etc. in an effort to relieve my discomfort long enough. :)

Keep the fitting appointment.

Yes I did Lilith..but that wasn't the problem..everytime I chewed I would hear a loud "pop" or "crack" and it would hurt like hell..so I barely ate solid food..

I have gotten the right side done...and the left side really hurts..and I won't go for the surgery in risk that I may never open my mouth as wide as it is now... :(...so, yes...keep the fitting appointment!!

I wouldn't wish the pain associated with TMJ surgery on my worst enemy!!!

My s/o has a mouth guard. She wears it every night. She actually likes it. She now sleeps at night and she wakes up in the morning and does not have a sore jaw.

Lilith, I and my son have had to use mouth guards before because of grinding our teeth in our sleep. My guard was from the dentist and cost a fortune! His was a simple mouth guard you can buy in any sporting goods department, like athletes wear, and worked just as well (his dentist recommended this). You might want to try one of these first to see how you react to wearing it. Just dip the mouth guard in VERY hot water for a second or two and put it in your mouth and bite down, it will conform to your teeth to fit like it should. Hope this helps.

Wellllllll I already dished out the $$$$$$$$$$ just waiting to pick it up. I would have tried the sports one.

I have/had TMJ. I used to wear a night guard every night so that I could at least function the next day (severe headaches, lock jaw, all kinds of fun). I also had 4 1/2 years of braces when I was a teenager to re-align my teeth so that my jaw could actually relax when my mouth closed.

I haven't worn any sort of day or night guard since then. I have to watch things like chewing gum or eating things that require a lot of chewing. Thankfully, I haven't had lock jaw in probably 10 years.

I know but I have no willpower to stop. I'm no good at restraining my desires.

Well, I did grind my teeth very bad,.......... key word, did, just last Friday I had all my upper teeth pulled and a couple of lower ones. I inherited bad teeth from my dad, which didn't help.
Now I just have to wait till I can afford dentures. May be this January, insurance company will only pay a max. of $1000.00 per year. Really sucks, I like to chew my food. Can't live without my blender now.

as another TMJ'er I can say that it is worth it...just takes a bit of getting used to wearing it while going to sleep.

I grind my teeth too...keeps my bf up at night, he says it is horrible. Unfortunately at the moment I can't afford to have the guard made. I have tried the ones from the drugstore, but I just ended up pulling it out of my mouth while I was sleeping. So I am real hesitant about forking out the cash for the one from the dentist. Although he says it would be much more comfortable and most likely I wouldn't end up removing it in my sleep. I need to do something soon, I feel terrible about ruining my bf's sleep and the jaw and neck pain I suffer is horrible. So Lilith, let me know how yours works out for you once you get it.

I used to grind my teeth really bad when I was very young. I stopped when my father said "stop grinding your teeth or I'm gonna pull the damn things out!".

Good ol' dad! Always coming up with cheap and violent cures for stuff like that!

Wonder why I was grinding my teeth.
